Improve social skills with video games? Most parents would disagree but recent research shows that school aged children that play video games, are better at interacting with peers and others in a friendly environment, so having your child sitting on a PlayStation and having them talk to several new people aged the same as them, might not be the worst idea ever.
The game Minecraft and its developers have proceeded with this idea and have created an autism friendly environment of this game. Minecraft is a multiplayer sand box game based around squares and cubes, in this game, you can build almost anything, the sky is the limit. Its an imaginative, children friendly game and allows children to be free in their own world. Having this game available to children who may find being social difficult, allows for them to learn how to interact with others in a public environment.
Although they may seem dangerous and a waste of time, online video games can help for the greater good. Don’t worry if your child is spending around half an hour every day online if they are spending that half an hour happy and free. Video games can be a good break from the difficult times and responsibilities in real life.
